Smuggling at the Border

Over the weekend, U.S. Border Patrol Agents found 11 Chinese nationals in an attempt to smuggle them across the border.

The migrants were hiding inside of appliances and furniture being carried by a moving truck crossing the border from Mexico.  Around 5:30 pm on Saturday, officers stopped a 42-year old male truck driver for further inspection.  Upon searching the vehicle, Customs and Border Protection officers discovered the Chinese nationals.

Officers then took the driver, a U.S. citizen, to the Metropolitan Correctional Center with charges of human smuggling.  The 11 individuals are also being held for pending criminal and immigration charges.

This incident comes about one month after agents found six Chinese nationals hiding in another moving truck also driven by an American Citizen.

According to U.S Customs and Borders Protection, most recently, about 52,546 migrants were detained at ports of entry for attempting to cross the border illegally.  Furthermore, more than 60% of people charged with smuggling across the border have been U.S. citizens with little to no criminal history.
