Seattle Slashed Police Budget Last Year — After 6 Weekend Shootings, the Mayor’s Begging for More Officers

After a string of shootings in her city over the weekend, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan – who last year backed a budget cut to the police department – called for hiring more officers.

So what

Critics of law enforcement reform movements warned that “defunding the police” would have consequences.

Durkan addressed the need for officers at a Monday press conference after six weekend shootings left four dead and two injured.

Money quote: “As a city, we cannot continue on this current trajectory of losing police officers,” Durkan said, blaming “city leaders” who advocated radical cuts to the police budget.

In November 2020, Durkan signed a city budget that slashed police funds by 18%.

But: Some city council members felt 18% was insufficient, and called for cuts of up to 50% — after which the city’s first black female police chief resigned.
