QUOTE OF THE DAY: Jussie Smollett’s Sandwich

A former Chicago police chief said a sandwich belied actor Jussie Smollett’s now-debunked hate crime report.

THE QUOTE

Former Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said he had his doubts about Smollett’s story — that he was jumped by racist and homophobic Trump supporters outside his Chicago apartment on Jan. 29 2019 — from the beginning.

“He went to a Subway sandwich shop at like two in the morning to get a sandwich. OK, that’s fine. He comes back gets attacked in a hate crime, supposed hate crime. And during all this scuffle, they poured bleach on him and all of this,” Johnson told “Morning in America” Friday.

  • “When he got up and went into his apartment building, he still had this Subway sandwich. Well, that doesn’t happen. When people get attacked like that whatever belongings they have out there, they usually leave it until the police can go back with them because they’re afraid, This guy had the sandwich in his hand and never been touched.”
MEANWHILE

Smollett has few defenders left — with the notable exception of Black Lives Matter — but has defiantly maintained his innocence nonetheless.
