Two graduate students from the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation recently unveiled a product that “personifies political correctness” by setting off alarms at the sound of “offensive” speech, such as racial slurs and ableist language.
Zinah Issa, one of the students who designed the product, told the Telegraph that the lamp-sized Themis could be used in social situations where people are “less likely to speak up” when offended.
- “Extremely bothersome alarms last approximately two minutes, after which Themis turns off, allowing an open, understanding discussion among people on the possible trigger matter and the potential reasons behind Themis’s activation,” Issa said.
- She added that the device, named for the Greek goddess of law and social order, could also be useful in professional and academic settings.
- Themis debuted at Dubai Design Week last week, and is currently being trialed in classrooms and universities, according to the Daily Mail.
