Police departments across several states have begun to use drones with recordings that will deploy if people do not follow COVID-19 guidelines.
In New Jersey, the Elizabeth Police Department stated that, “These drones will be around the city with an automated message from the mayor telling you to STOP gathering, disperse and go home.” (Fox News). Fines for violating social distancing procedures will range up to $1,000. While many have expressed privacy concerns over the use of drones, the authorities have assured the public that no recordings and pictures are being taken.
Drones are equipped with a flare system that can detect body temperatures ranging from 99-105 degrees. Police departments hope that this will allow first responders to avoid human contact in an effort to slow the spread.
