Chinese officials have threatened Australia with possible economic sanctions if they decide to proceed with an investigation of Beijing’s handling of COVID-19.
The ambassador to Australia stated that Beijing could encourage Chinese citizens to boycott any Australian products and exports to their country. In response to these statements, the Australian Foreign Minister repeated his calls for an investigation of Chinese handling of the virus, calling the threats “economic coercion” in the process.
The call by the Australian government resonates with American calls for an independent investigation into the handling of the outbreak.
